2003 University of Kansas Sigma Xi Paper Competition
Role in Lab
My project is to create a common names module to the hexacorallians database. Up to this point I have:
- Created the common names database, including 11 tables, 110 fields, and 359 records.
- Added 304 common names to the database from aquarium books and field guides.
- Developed 7 web pages that allow a user to search the tables, view information about the common names, references and scientific names in the database and enter new names to the database.
- Developed 10 web pages that allow workers to enter names from references and check names entered by users.
- Prepared and presented a poster for the University of Kansas Undergraduate Research Symposium.
- Prepared and presented a first place award winning talk for the undergraduate division of the University of Kansas Sigma Xi Paper Competition.
- Published the first version of my pages on the database for hexacorals web site.
Within the next several months I will:
- Add more common names to the database from additional references I have acquired.
- Make some minor changes to the database structure
- Contact scientists and marine book authors who have shown interest in adding common names to the web site
