Rafe Brown's Lab homepage at the University of Kansas

Welcome to the lab homepage of Rafe Brown at the Natural History Museum and Biodiversity Institute at the University of Kansas. The current Herp-of-the-month is the Black-spotted Sticky Frog, Kalophrynus pleurostigma. This species has full inguinal ocelli that it shows off when threatened. When approached by a predator or photographer, this species puffs up, extends its legs, and orients its hindquarters towards the perceived threat. If you squint real hard and stare for ten minutes or more, this photo will start to look less like a frog butt and more like a snake head. Ooooh, scarrry..
