Preparation types

Mammalian material in natural history collections is stored in many different ways. In the following descriptions, the parenthetical codes are the ones used in our computerized databased for those prep types.

In the KU collections, the most common pr ep type is a stuffed skin, with the skull cleaned and stored in a separated container (SS). Second most common is a stuffed skin with the entire skeleton cleaned and stored separately (SB). It is not uncommon to run across specimens which consist only o f a skull (SK) or cranium (CO). Other specimens may consist of a partial skeleton (PS), an entire skeleton (SN), or only of a skin (SO). Many of our specimens are stored in alcohol (AL), or are in alcohol with the skull removed and cleaned (SA). Becaus e we have active public education and exhibits programs, a few of our specimens are taxidermy mounts (BM). Other preparation types are coded as "other" (OT). Occasionally, specimens are prepared with the baculum or os clitoris separately stored in prese rving fluid. Non-standard preparation types and additional materials are noted in a comments field in our database.
