Technical Notes and Acknowledgments
This checklist is the result of observations made by many persons. Steinbacher (1956, 1958) reported 25 bird species collected at areas within or adjacent to today's Montecristo National Park. Peter Hamel, a student from York University in Ontario, spent 13 days in the cloud forest during June-August 1974. Hamel's unpublished report contained a list of 98 species for the park. Added to Steinbacher's reports the park list reached 102 species. Walter Thurber and his colleagues visited the park a number of times in the early 1970s, and Thurber (1978) documented 11 new species for the park with published photographs. Hellebuyck (1983) reported two species of birds new for El Salvador that were collected from the park. Various observations of birds, including specimens collected during the 1970s, were reported by Thurber and coworkers (1987), including 16 new species for the park. Pullen (1983) studied the abundance, distribution, and behavior of Penelopina nigra in the park, but did not report additional species. In 1990, Néstor Herrera and Wilfredo Rodríguez (pers. comm.) noted a single new species, bringing the bird list to 132.
The author visited the park briefly in 1991, 1995, and 1996, recording 35 species—mostly migrants—not previously reported from the park. A few of these species were new records for El Salvador (Komar in press). Most of the existing ornithological information was compiled in an unpublished park bird list in 1996 by Juan Pablo Domínguez, a biologist who directed the park for El Salvador's national parks and wildlife service in 1995 and 1996. Domínguez had encountered 38 new species, mostly in the semi-deciduous tropical forest in the lowest part of the park, and the list totaled 205 species. In 1995 and 1997, Néstor Herrera (unpublished data) found six new species. During 1997–1999, Ricardo Ibarra (unpublished data) recorded three more species. A four-day visit in June 1998 by Wilfredo Rodríguez, Karla Pérez, Néstor Herrera, Roberto Rivera, and Ricardo Ibarra (unpublished data), added four species. During February–March 1999, Wilfredo Rodríguez, Roberto Rivera, and Ricardo Ibarra (unpublished data) added 9 more species to the park's bird list. The present list includes a total of 233 species of birds, including six species first encountered by the author in 1999 during an inventory of the park's breeding birds.
The checklist follows the taxonomy (scientific and English names) of the American Ornithologists' Union (1998). The Spanish names come from Howell and Webb (1995). Information about status of birds in El Salvador comes from Komar and Domínguez (in press) and from Komar (1998). Populations of birds in the park will change in the future. Also, the current information about birds is still incomplete. Persons who wish to contribute observations of birds in the park are invited to send copies of field notes or other correspondence to the author care of SalvaNATURA, San Salvador, or by email to okomar@ukans.edu.
I thank all of the biologists and other observers who have contributed information, both published and unpublished, to this compilation. I especially thank Wilfredo Rodríguez, Roberto Rivera, and Ricardo Ibarra who assisted with the inventory work, and Juan Pablo Domínguez and Néstor Herrera, who provided information for so many of the species on the list. I thank the El Salvador Servicio de Parques Nacionales y Vida Silvestre for the collaboration of park personnel, especially Jaime Antonio Latín Figueroa, park director, and park guards Juan José Aldana, Silvestre Carranza, Cruz Castro Alonzo, Raúl Gutiérrez Acosta, Juan José Hernández, José Luís Ladino, Cristobal Ladino Ramires, Heriberto Lima, Alejandro López Ramos, José Gilberto Molina, Eduardo Orellana Ramos, Juan Pacheco Gutiérrez, Eugenio Ramos y Caín Vega Funes. I thank Santos and Olivia Hernández for their warm hospitality during field work.
Funding for the inventory was provided by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, and by a Madison A. and Lila Self Graduate Research Fellowship from the University of Kansas. Additional logistical support was provided by SalvaNATURA and by the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales.
