KOMAR, O. In prep. Notes on Distribution and Behavior of the Hooded Grosbeak (Coccothraustes abeillei). [Submitted 1 October 2000. Do not cite without Author's permission.] ABSTRACT.—I measured relative abundance of breeding Hooded Grosbeaks (Coccothraustes abeillei cobanensis) in three forest habitats in Montecristo National Park in northwestern El Salvador. The species was detected more frequently in Mexican cypress (Cupressus lusitanicus) plantations than in natural cloud forest and pine-oak forest. I observed two pairs collecting nesting material, a female building a nest in Mexican cypress, and males guarding mates. Hooded Grosbeaks in El Salvador occupy an area smaller than 20 km2. The minimum population estimate is 72 pairs, but that estimate is not corrected for the probability of detection, which is unknown.
