31 December 2000--NEW PUBLICATION: "Black-vented Oriole nests in a cabin in El Salvador", by Oliver Komar, Wilfredo Rodríguez, and Ricardo Ibarra, was published in the December issue of the Wilson Bulletin (vol 112, pp. 551-553).
10-31 December 2000--EL SALVADOR TRIP. Thanks to a travel grant from the Kansas Biological Survey, I visited El Salvador at the end of the year, to evaluate my ongoing and future research of biodiversity in the coffee producing region of southwestern El Salvador. I also visited Montecristo National Park to georeference aerial photos for an eventual habitat map of the park, in colaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
6 November 2000--EL SALVADOR REPTILES & AMPHIBIANS ONLINE. My own herp image gallery is now ready, plus Eli Greenbaum has put up some results from his collecting expedition in July and August.
30 October 2000--TRIP TO MASSACHUSETTS. Thanks to a travel grant from the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, I will be participating in the First International Workshop of the North American Colonial Waterbird Conservation Plan in Plymouth Massachusetts today and tomorrow, at the Hotel Sheraton, Plymouth.
25 October 2000--MONTECRISTO CHECKLIST. Download the Checklist of the Birds of Montecristo National Park, El Salvador. This 13-p. document is published by SalvaNATURA. Features 233 species and their relative abundances in cloud forest, pine-oak forest, and cypress plantation.
17 October 2000--WHERE TO FIND BIRDS IN EL SALVADOR. This new page describes six good birding sites.

21 September 2000--PHOTO PUBLISHED. My photos of Pinguicula mesophytica were published on the cover of and inside the International Pinguicula Study Group Newsletter volume 10 (Autumn 2000). This beautiful carnivorous and epiphytic plant is found only in the vicinity of Montecristo National Park, from where it was described for science in 1997. My photos are the first published of this species. The photos inspired a short article that appears in the bulletin.
12 September 2000--BACK FROM PANAMA. I just returned from an excellent Fourth Congress of the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation. I presented a paper on preliminary results of my research in coffee plantations. I also completed 4½ years of service as editor and board member (lately, vice president) for the Society. The Fifth Congress will be in San Salvador, 15-19 October 2001.
25 August 2000--NEW PUBLICATIONS in press: "Contribuciones a la avifauna de El Salvador" will be published in Cotinga, and "Black-vented Oriole nests in a cabin in El Salvador" will be published in the Wilson Bulletin. Here is a map of El Salvador, which I prepared for the Cotinga article.
16 August 2000--WORKSHOP IN PERQUIN. I led an avitourism workshop in the Perquin area of El Salvador, 8-12 August, for the El Salvador Corporation of Tourism (CORSATUR) and a local tourism development association (PRODETUR). During the workshop I increased the inventory of birds of Perquin by over 20%.

17 April 2000--A new bird species discovered for El Salvador! On 20 March, Ronald Brenneman and Marisol Galindo of Perquin, Morazan, El Salvador, noted the first Chestnut-headed Oropendolas (Psarocolius wagleri) for El Salvador, as a group of 1 male and 3 females began to build a mini-colony in their garden. The birds are still present, with two nests built. Documentary photos below:
17 April 2000--I was coauthor of an invited presentation given today by Miguel Araujo at the Annual Meeting of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, in San Francisco, California. The talk was entitled: "Shade Coffee Science in El Salvador: Supporting the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor with the Coffee Forests of El Salvador."
10 April 2000--Montecristo research in the news! Today, the Diario de Hoy, a major San Salvador newspaper, ran an article on the results of the 1999 inventory of birds of Montecristo National Park in their national news section. 13 Mar. 2000--Oliver Komar was invited by the SICA/CCAD to present the talk "NABIN y Centroamerica: integrando bases de datos de la biodiversidad en una base distribuida por internet" in the Working Meeting of the Mesoamerican Biodiversity Information System, Hotel Suites Central Park, Panama City, Panama. The talk was co-authored by A. Townsend Peterson.
24 Feb. 2000--Oliver Komar presented the lecture "Conserving Biodiversity in Coffee Plantations of El Salvador" at the Latin American Studies Merienda lecture series, University of Kansas, Lawrence.
18 Feb. 2000--Dr. Nick Komar (Oliver's twin brother) appeared on NBC twice in early February, regarding the West Nile Virus outbreak in New York. Nick was also recently published in SCIENCE on the same topic: Dec. 17, 1999, 286(5448):2333-7.
7 Feb. 2000--Today I was invited onto the Technical Advisory Board of the Asociación Pro-Museo Stephen Hawking (Stephen W. Hawking Science Museum), in San Salvador, El Salvador.
